About Me

Madison Tobin Setzer, MS, LCMHC, CRC

Hey y’all! My name is Madison and I am what I like to call a North Carolina-lifer. I am passionate about all things North Carolina, from our barbecue (Eastern style) to the NC State Wolfpack. Despite my love for the state, I also have a HUGE love of traveling, with my favorite destinations being the Great Barrier Reef and Chobe National Park. I am a rescue scuba diver and a Divemaster, and being underwater is where I feel most at home. Growing up, I volunteered in the Recreational Therapy department at Duke Hospital with Oncology and Palliative Care patients. My love for emphasizing the importance of mindfulness and mental health in unique settings grew as I went to NC State for my undergraduate degree and majored in Biology. Although I can’t say I was ever thankful to sit in an Organic Chemistry class, my Biology degree gave me a unique perspective into the way our brains and bodies work, and the complexity of mental health as a whole.

After undergrad, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I received my masters degree and licensure in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling. During the course of my time in the program, I was accepted to work as part of the UNC Psychiatry Consult Liaison team bringing me back to my love of working in the hospital. I worked with a variety of patients in the Burn Unit and Oncology floors, as well as patients who endured unexpected amputations, high speed motor vehicle crashes, pregnancy loss and mental health crisis. In my last semester, I was lucky enough to be accepted to a position on Fort Bragg, working in Vocational Rehabilitation to assist Veterans experiencing a multitude of disabilities with the opportunity to attend college or obtain a job that didn’t aggravate their conditions. This meant a lot to me personally, as an individual with many family members who served our country, and fostered my love for working with Veterans.

I hope to bring my background into each session, providing an environment where clients feel not only seen and heard, but understood fully. I emphasize compassion, empathy, humor and authenticity to drive clients into feeling empowered with themselves and the choices they make in an uncertain world. I specialize in working with adult clients, pre-teens and teens, individuals and families in the palliative care system, and Veterans. My therapy style is based upon principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy.
